Breaking News: The American Public University System APUS now has a Chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS).
Mission - Supporting Women in Science
The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) is the largest multi-discipline organization for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) dedicated to achieving equity and full participation of women in all disciplines and across all employment sectors. AWIS reaches more than 15,000 professionals in STEM with members and chapters nationwide. Membership is open to any individual who supports the vision and mission of AWIS.
Promoting women in STEM through encouragement, support, and mentoring.
The goal of AWIS is to achieve equity and full participation of women in science, technology, and engineering.
AWIS Affiliates extend the reach and effectiveness of our collective advocacy efforts on behalf of women in STEM. Affiliates are grassroots and agile. Their activity may be centered at one campus or location, or they may be a seed group for a chapter in a larger community. Their activities can vary greatly based on the leadership and community they serve. However, like Chapters, Affiliates bring together professionals and students across all disciplines, career stages, and employment sectors. By joining an Affiliate, members have opportunities to advance their careers through information sharing, outreach and professional networking in formal and informal social settings.

As a dedicated non-traditional student at the American Public University System, I am pursuing my M.S. in Earth and Planetary Science, building on my A.S. in Space Studies and B.S. in Aerospace Science. My ethnic background is a rich tapestry woven from my Cherokee, Seneca, and Mohawk heritage, which has instilled in me a deep respect for nature, community, and the interconnectedness of all living things. Additionally, I embody my Spanish Chicano heritage, reflecting a blend of diverse cultural influences that have shaped my perspectives and aspirations.
This cultural foundation informs my passion for exploration and environmental stewardship, driving my ambition to contribute meaningfully to the fields of astrobiology and aerospace aviation through future doctoral research. I recently gained valuable experience as a safety intern with the Virginia Spaceport Authority in the summer of 2024 and am excited to explore new opportunities within these fields.
Beyond my academic pursuits, I am committed to education and outreach as a NASA Eclipse Pathway Ambassador. I look forward to participating in the ASP Winter Field Study on Helio Physics in Fairbanks, Alaska, and I take pride in being a NASA L’SPACE alumnus. I am also honored to have been selected as a NASA Climate Change Research Initiative Educator Ambassador for 2025. After my Analog Astronaut training in Spring 2025 for the AARG Mission, I aim to further my involvement by training as a Flight Director.
In my personal life, I enjoy a diverse array of hobbies, including hiking, cooking, writing, painting, creating music, traveling, spelunking, and collecting first edition books. As a parent to three grown sons, I fully embrace the adventure of lifelong learning.
One of my guiding beliefs is encapsulated in my favorite quote: "Together we can change the world, just one random act of kindness at a time."

Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, I developed a love for all things science and nature at a very young age thanks in part to my grandpa who adored wildlife and the outdoors. I received an associates in applied science and then a bachelor’s in geography with an emphasis on environmental science from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2013. In 2020, I graduated with a Masters in Public Health from Columbia Southern University and then finished my MS in Environmental Management and Policy at APU in 2023. I am back at APU to finish a graduate certificate in Fish & Wildlife Management. In 2018, I founded a nonprofit called Native and Wild Nebraska that encourages the use of native flora in urban landscapes. Check us out on FB and Instagram!! I spend my free time rescuing wildlife as a volunteer for the Nebraska Wildlife Rehab and currently, I work as GM for Nebraska Scientific, a STEM retail company in Omaha. Our specialty is preserving specimens for dissection in classrooms, which is definitely a unique industry! If I’m not working, I’m traveling and will visit my last continent in spring of 2025!
